Having used Camtasia extensively, if youre starting out and see it as some sort of screencasting program (can you call it that?) it probably willnt be a revelation. It isnt like making movies with Final Cut Pro. Its got a few shortcomings. It isnt even close to the level of Adobe After Effects or Adobe After Effects CC. Its ability to drop audio clips into a video is very limited at best. You can import source files into the program, but you cant edit them. Unlike Adobe After Effects, its audio is not embedded in the final file. Unless you intend to make a tutorial full of music or some other form of audio youre stuck with third party apps or a separate audio recorder. There are a few areas of excellence with Camtasia, but it basically works.

Ive learned a little about its inner workings, but theres far too much here on this one. Its now owned by Telestream, and I believe that its user base has been thinned out as they attempt to spin it off. Its an incredibly powerful piece of software that for educational purposes I think will get away from the large studios with tutorials to supplement their keystone courses, particularly keystone level courses that combine both online and offline activities. It would be interesting to see someone create a really good webinar and deliver it in their own Camtasia tutorial. If youre using something like Adobe After Effects, why not use your own Camtasia tutorial instead of a tutorial of a known company who may or may not be on board with your company. I love the flexibility of Camtasia, but I dont love the high end cost. If youre serious about screencasting, I think youll have to consider a cheap option. If you have a great tutorial that you want to create a screencast tutorial on, either make it or use a service like Camtasia.

I agree with most of what Rob said in this review, as I have had issues with both Camtasia and Screencast. Screencast is fine, but the free Camtasia product is not a great tool. When I did export a Camtasia MP4, it was compressed to DVD quality as the Camtasia import feature creates a high quality video at the time of playback. It is an issue that TechSmith can work on for future release.
